LOMBOK

Volcanoes, islands and culture east of Bali

Lombok, Indonesia – Volcano Landscapes and Island Culture

Lombok lies just east of Bali and forms part of the Lesser Sunda Islands of Indonesia. The island is dominated by the massive volcano Mount Rinjani, one of the highest mountains in Indonesia, whose dramatic crater landscapes shape much of Lombok’s interior.

Beyond the volcanic highlands, Lombok is known for its coastal environments, coral islands and traditional villages where Sasak culture remains an important part of everyday life.

From mountain landscapes and crater lakes to island beaches and rural communities, Lombok offers a wide variety of photographic environments within a relatively compact island.

This page brings together photographic galleries and stories exploring different parts of Lombok.

Volcanoes & Mountain Landscapes

The landscape of Lombok is dominated by Mount Rinjani, an active volcano rising more than 3,700 metres above sea level. Its crater rim, volcanic slopes and surrounding forests form one of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in Indonesia.

Islands & Coastal Landscapes

Off the northwest coast of Lombok lie the famous Gili Islands, known for their white beaches, coral reefs and turquoise waters. These small islands contrast strongly with the volcanic landscapes of Lombok’s interior.

Culture & Village Life

Many rural areas of Lombok are inhabited by the Sasak people, whose traditions, architecture and agricultural life shape much of the island’s cultural landscape.

Exploring Lombok Through Photography

The galleries above explore Lombok through photography across its volcanic landscapes, coastal islands and cultural environments.

From the dramatic crater of Mount Rinjani to rural villages and tropical coastlines, these photographic journeys reveal the diversity of landscapes found on one of Indonesia’s most remarkable islands.

Regions of Lombok

Although smaller than many Indonesian islands, Lombok contains several distinct landscapes shaped by volcanic geology and coastal environments.

Mount Rinjani – Volcano of Lombok

Mount Rinjani dominates the island’s interior and forms the centrepiece of Gunung Rinjani National Park. The volcano’s massive caldera contains the crater lake Segara Anak, one of the most dramatic volcanic landscapes in Indonesia.

The surrounding mountains, forests and volcanic slopes create spectacular scenery for trekking and photography.

The Gili Islands – Coral Islands of Lombok

Just offshore from Lombok’s northwest coast lie the Gili Islands — Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. These small coral islands are known for their clear waters, beaches and marine life.
