MENTAWAI TRIBE – SIBERUT ISLAND

Immersive journeys into the forest culture of the Mentawai people

Mentawai Private Tour & Expedition – Siberut Island

With Toine IJsseldijk

I design and lead a limited number of Mentawai expeditions and cultural journeys into the interior of Siberut Island, home to the Indigenous Mentawai people.

Built on decades of long-term relationships, these journeys offer rare access for travelers, photographers, and filmmakers seeking meaningful cultural engagement rather than surface-level tourism.

Whether joining a custom Mentawai tour or a specialized photography or filmmaking expedition, each journey is guided with patience, cultural knowledge, and ethical practice, allowing genuine immersion into one of Indonesia’s oldest living cultures.

Siberut Island & the Mentawai People

Siberut is the largest of the Mentawai Islands, located about 150 km west of Sumatra in the Indian Ocean. Much of the island remains covered in dense rainforest, protected by its remoteness and by generations of Indigenous guardianship.

The Mentawai are among the oldest cultures in Indonesia. For centuries they lived in relative isolation, developing a way of life closely connected to the rhythms of the forest. Many communities still practice a semi-nomadic lifestyle based on hunting, fishing, gathering, and small-scale agriculture.

Mentawai society is deeply animistic. The forest, rivers, animals, ancestors, and humans are all understood as part of a single living system. Maintaining balance between these forces is essential for well-being.

Why These Mentawai Journeys Exist

These journeys are not conventional tours.

They are the result of more than three decades of relationships and trust with Mentawai families on Siberut. The goal is not to observe culture from the outside, but to spend time within the rhythm of daily life.

Travel is slow, flexible, and shaped by the realities of the forest, community life, and ritual obligations.

Nothing is staged.

What you witness unfolds naturally.

Meet Your Guide – Toine IJsseldijk

My connection with the Mentawai began more than three decades ago. I first visited Siberut in 1990, and over the years developed close relationships with families living in the island’s interior.

Through repeated visits and long-term trust, I was gradually welcomed into community life — not as a passing visitor, but as someone allowed to return again and again. These relationships form the foundation of the journeys I organise today.

Over the years I have guided researchers, photographers, filmmakers, and small groups of travelers into the Mentawai interior, always with the same principle: respect for Mentawai culture and for the families who host us.

These expeditions are therefore not conventional tours. They are journeys made possible by relationships built slowly over time.

Travel into the Interior of Siberut

Visiting the Mentawai is not sightseeing.

It is an immersion into a living cultural landscape where daily life, ritual, and environment remain inseparable.

From the coast the journey continues by pickup truck and canoe, traveling upriver deep into the rainforest interior. Traditional uma longhouses lie scattered along forest valleys, each home to extended families.

Guests stay within the community, sharing daily routines and witnessing ceremonies when they occur.

Journey Upriver into the Mentawai Rainforest

Reaching the interior of Siberut is part of the experience.

River journeys, forest paths, and canoe travel gradually create distance from the outside world and allow visitors to adapt to the rhythm of forest life.

There is rarely a fixed schedule.

Days are shaped by weather, river levels, ceremonies, and the needs of the community.

Flexibility and patience are essential — and rewarded.

Living in a Traditional Uma

Accommodation is in a traditional Mentawai uma, the communal longhouse that forms the centre of social life.

Sleeping arrangements are simple and communal, with mosquito nets provided. Guests share space with the host family, offering a rare opportunity to observe everyday Mentawai life.

For those seeking additional privacy, two small separate huts are available near the uma.

Electricity is limited to small solar installations, and bathing often takes place in the river.

Food in the Mentawai Interior

Food supplies in the interior of Siberut are limited.

For each expedition, basic supplies are brought from Muara Siberut, including rice, vegetables, eggs, noodles, spices, and canned foods.

Meals are simple but nourishing and often supplemented with forest produce, traditional foods, and seasonal fruits gathered locally.

Most meals are shared with the host family, an important aspect of Mentawai hospitality.

Belief, Ritual & Everyday Life

Mentawai life revolves around maintaining balance between the visible and invisible worlds.

Illness, misfortune, or conflict are understood as signs of imbalance requiring ritual attention.

Depending on timing, visitors may witness ceremonies related to healing, hunting, house construction, or life-cycle events.

Participation is always respectful and guided.

Your Mentawai Hosts

Your primary hosts are Teteu and her family, whose household forms the centre of daily life during the journey.

Her sons Aman Manja and Aman Sasali are among the youngest traditional kerei (Mentawai shamans) still practicing on Siberut.

Together the family shares knowledge of forest life, ritual practice, and Mentawai traditions.

Responsible & Ethical Mentawai Travel

These journeys are built on reciprocity and long-term relationships.

Approximately 20% of trip payments is returned directly to Mentawai communities.

Funds support:

  • education and healthcare
  • maintenance and construction of uma longhouses
  • solar installations
  • canoe engines
  • other community needs

Activities During Mentawai Expeditions

Activities vary depending on circumstances and may include:

  • forest walks and waterfall visits
  • traditional fishing
  • hunting expeditions
  • preparation of arrow poison
  • food gathering and cooking
  • traditional craft making
  • observing ceremonies and rituals

Physical demands are moderate, but conditions are humid and remote, requiring reasonable fitness and adaptability.

Special Ceremony Expedition – Initiation of a New Uma

A rare ceremony will take place in Butui village, where a new traditional uma longhouse will be blessed and inaugurated.

The uma belongs to Aman Naru, a respected shaman whom I have known since 1990.

The ceremony will last several days and include:

  • traditional rituals and sacrifices
  • night-long shaman dances and songs
  • ceremonial hunting
  • elaborate traditional attire

These ceremonies are increasingly rare and offer a unique opportunity to witness Mentawai ritual culture at its most vibrant.

Mentawai Expeditions for Photographers & Filmmakers

I also design and lead specialized Mentawai expeditions for serious photographers and filmmakers.

Because these journeys are built on long-term relationships, they allow ethical documentation of Mentawai life that cannot be arranged independently.

Access is guided carefully and respectfully, particularly when sacred rituals are involved.
