Namibia’s Inselberg Landscape
Day 6 & 7 of 27 – Namibia & Botswana Safari Trip
Spitzkoppe is a dramatic cluster of granite inselbergs that rise abruptly from the surrounding plains. Formed over 100 million years ago, the rock formations are known for their smooth curves, natural arches and changing colors at sunrise and sunset. San rock art can be found in sheltered overhangs, linking the landscape to Namibia’s deep human history. The openness of the terrain and the clarity of the night sky make Spitzkoppe one of the country’s most visually striking desert locations.
Day 6: Swakopmund – Spitzkoppe
After our “Living Desert” tour near Swakopmund we drove to Spitzkoppe, our first stop in Damaraland. Damaraland is a semi-desert spectacular wilderness with breathtaking mountainous scenery in Northwestern Namibia, and is home to the country’s famous desert-adapted elephants and black rhino, and also to small settlements of the ethnic Herero in the south and Himba tribe in the far north.
We checked-in at Spitzkoppe Rest Camp and were free to drive around and find a camping spot. Spitzkoppe was one of my favourite camping sites and offers some of the most spectacular night skies in the world.
Day 7: Spitzkoppe – Twyfelfontein – Aba Huab – Palmwag
We had an early start, as today we wanted to have as much time as possible to look for desert elephants somewhere along the way. But not after enjoying one more time the incredible scenery of Spitzkoppe, in the golden light of sunrise!
