Wolotopo Traditional Village, Flores – Photo Gallery

Ceremonial houses and living Lio culture near Ende

Wolotopo is a traditional Lio village located on a steep hillside along the south coast of Flores, about 12 kilometres east of Ende. The village is known for its ceremonial houses, strong adherence to adat traditions, and its continuing practice of ikat weaving.

Unlike some heritage villages in Indonesia, Wolotopo remains a living community. Several ancestral houses are still inhabited, and daily life unfolds around traditional structures shaped by both Lio adat customs and Catholic influences.

The village layout follows a central stone-paved axis climbing the hillside, with ceremonial houses facing inward toward communal space. Among the most important structures are the sao ria (great house), the ritual house sao su’e, and the small keda kanga where ancestral remains are kept.

These photographs document the architecture, daily life and cultural traditions that continue to shape Wolotopo today.
