FLORES

Volcanoes, traditional villages and landscapes of eastern Indonesia

Flores, Indonesia – Volcano Landscapes, Villages and Island Culture

Flores is one of the most spectacular islands of eastern Indonesia, known for its volcanoes, traditional villages and dramatic landscapes. Stretching roughly 360 kilometres from east to west, the island forms part of the Lesser Sunda chain between Sumbawa and Timor.

Across Flores, volcanic mountains rise above deep valleys, rice terraces and small villages where traditional architecture and local customs remain part of everyday life. The island’s landscapes change constantly — from the famous three coloured crater lakes of Kelimutu to the cool highlands of Bajawa and Ruteng, and the dry savannah islands of Komodo National Park in the far west.

For travellers and photographers alike, Flores offers one of the most varied overland journeys in Indonesia.

This page brings together photographic galleries and stories from across Flores, exploring its landscapes, villages and cultural traditions.

Volcanoes & Mountain Landscapes

Flores lies along the Indonesian volcanic arc, and volcanoes shape much of the island’s landscape. Mountains such as Kelimutu, Inerie, and Egon rise above valleys, forests and agricultural terraces.

Traditional Villages

Traditional villages are among the most distinctive cultural landmarks of Flores. Settlements such as Bena, Gurusina, Belaraghi, and the remote mountain village of Wae Rebo preserve unique architecture and ceremonial spaces that reflect centuries of local traditions.

Culture & Rural Life

Across Flores, everyday life unfolds in markets, fields and small mountain communities. Agricultural traditions, village ceremonies and local crafts remain closely connected to the landscapes that surround them.

Komodo & the Flores Sea

At the western end of Flores lies Komodo National Park, where dry savannah islands rise from the turquoise waters of the Flores Sea. The islands of Komodo and Rinca are famous for the Komodo dragon and for landscapes that contrast strongly with the green volcanic interior of Flores.

Exploring Flores Through Photography

Flores offers a remarkable variety of landscapes within a relatively small island. Volcanoes, valleys, traditional villages and coastal scenery combine to create one of the most visually diverse regions of Indonesia.

The galleries above explore these environments through photography, documenting both natural landscapes and cultural life across the island.

Regions of Flores

Although relatively narrow, Flores contains several distinct regions shaped by geography and culture.

East Flores – Maumere and Coastal Landscapes

The eastern part of the island around Maumere contains fishing villages, beaches and coastal landscapes. Communities such as Wuring reflect the maritime traditions of eastern Flores.

Central Flores – Kelimutu and Moni

The small mountain village of Moni lies near the famous Kelimutu volcano, whose three crater lakes change colour over time. Kelimutu is one of the most iconic natural landmarks in Indonesia.

Bajawa Highlands – Ngada Villages

The cool highlands around Bajawa are home to several traditional villages of the Ngada people, including Bena, Gurusina, and Belaraghi. These villages are known for their distinctive houses and ceremonial stone structures.

Manggarai Highlands – Ruteng and Spiderweb Fields

The fertile highlands around Ruteng contain rice fields arranged in remarkable spiderweb patterns, a traditional land division system known as Lingko.

Western Flores – Wae Rebo and Komodo

In the mountainous interior of western Flores lies the remote village of Wae Rebo, famous for its traditional conical houses. Further west, the town of Labuan Bajo serves as the gateway to Komodo National Park.

- TRIP REPORTS -

visual journeys

One of the most rewarding ways to experience Flores is by travelling across the island by road.

My journey followed a 9-day itinerary from Maumere to Labuan Bajo, passing through Kelimutu, Bajawa, Ruteng and Wae Rebo before continuing to Komodo National Park.
