Kelimutu Crater Lakes, Flores

The Three-Coloured Crater Lakes of Central Flores

Mount Kelimutu is one of the most remarkable natural sites on Flores Island in Indonesia, famous for its three crater lakes that periodically change colour. Located at an elevation of 1,639 metres in the highlands of central Flores, Kelimutu forms part of Kelimutu National Park, a protected volcanic landscape surrounded by forest and traditional villages.

The three lakes – each with its own colour and meaning – lie close together at the summit of the volcano. Over time they have appeared in shades of turquoise, green, black, red and brown, creating one of the most unusual geological phenomena in Southeast Asia.

For the Lio people of Flores, Kelimutu is more than a volcanic landmark. The lakes are believed to be the resting places of ancestral souls, and their changing colours reflect the spiritual state of the departed.

About the Kelimutu Crater Lakes

The three lakes of Kelimutu sit side by side at the summit of the volcano but differ in both colour and cultural meaning.

Tiwu Ata Mbupu – Lake of the Ancestors
Located on the western side of the crater, this lake is traditionally believed to be the resting place of older souls. It often appears dark blue or almost black.

Tiwu Ko’o Fai Nuwa Muri – Lake of Young Souls
This lake is usually turquoise or green and is believed to receive the souls of young people.

Tiwu Ata Polo – Lake of Evil Spirits
The third lake, sometimes appearing reddish or brown, is traditionally associated with troubled or restless spirits.

Although the lakes lie only metres apart, their colours frequently differ dramatically. These variations are caused by chemical reactions between volcanic gases and minerals rising from beneath the surface.

Kelimutu National Park

Kelimutu forms the centrepiece of Kelimutu National Park, an important protected area on Flores known for its volcanic landscapes, forests and endemic wildlife.

The surrounding hills are covered with montane forest and support a rich variety of bird species and plant life. Several endemic species occur here, making the area ecologically important beyond the famous crater lakes themselves.

Visiting Kelimutu

The most popular time to visit Kelimutu is at sunrise, when the weather is usually clearest before clouds move in later in the day.

Most travellers stay in the nearby village of Moni, located at the foot of the mountain.

From Moni, a paved road climbs toward the summit parking area. From there a 30-minute walk through forest leads to viewing platforms overlooking the crater lakes.

Moni Village

Moni is the main gateway village for visiting Kelimutu and lies along the Trans-Flores route between Ende and Maumere.

The surrounding landscape is fertile and scenic, with rice fields, waterfalls and forested hills. For travellers who stay longer, the area offers good opportunities for walking and exploring the wider region.

The traditional Moni market takes place on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, with Monday being the busiest day. Women from surrounding villages arrive wearing beautifully woven Lio ikat textiles, creating a colourful and lively scene early in the morning.

Hiking from Kelimutu to Moni

Instead of returning by car, it is possible to hike from the summit of Kelimutu down to Moni.

The trail passes through forest rich in birdlife and through traditional villages that are otherwise difficult to reach. The hike takes approximately five to six hours, mostly downhill.

Spending two nights in Moni allows time to experience both the sunrise at Kelimutu and the surrounding landscapes of the national park.
