Lake Batur – Bali

Batur is an enormous caldera, formed when an ancient volcano erupted and its top collapsed. Inside the caldera Lake Batur formed, from which the active volcano Mount Batur rose. The first documented eruption was in 1804 and the most recent was in 2000. The locals farm fish in the lake and grow fruits and vegetables on the surrounding fertile volcanic slopes. On the southeast shore of the lake lies the Bali Aga village of Trunyan, famous for its unique treatment of the dead. Read more about Trunyan HERE.

Mount Batur Caldera is now a part of UNESCO’s Global Geopark Network.
