The spectacular 800 square kilometres Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park in East Java, Indonesia, consists of the caldera of the ancient Tengger volcano and Java’s highest mountain, the active volcano Mount Semeru, also known as Mahameru (3,676 m). Inside the Tengger caldera, amidst a so-called sea of sand, laut pasir, five volcanoes have emerged, including the very active Bromo and dormant Batok.
